I Feel Sorry for the Models

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you – I genuinely feel sorry for the glamazons, picture perfect twiglets, designers’ muses, whatever you want to call them. Why? There’s only one real reason.

Not because some of them eat toilet paper, since our bodies can’t absorb or assimilate any useful nutrients (a.k.a. calories) from it but it still leaves your tummy feeling nice and full. Not because some of them snort coke for brunch and wash it down with a diet Coke instead of eating a hearty meal. No. They can all decide to exercise and eat healthily – which is another word for scarcely in fashion lingo – to still fit into the tiniest designer gowns and jumpsuits and wrap dresses and swimwear. You can also eat an entire pizza by yourself and be a model, just be prepare not to eat for the next 2 to 3 weeks.

I also can’t express any sympathy for them being widely stereotyped as mindless beautiful airheads. You’re making money without exercising your brain and your best reference is something you didn’t have to work for yourself – your genetic code? That doesn’t sound that heartbreaking to me. Besides – if you are just a gorgeous bubble of air, then the stereotype isn’t a stereotype, it’s the truth. And if you’ve got a brain of a rocket scientist and can do long divisions in your head but just so happen to be blessed with high cheekbones and extra long femurs, you’re better off and making more money than most other miserable bitches like myself so who cares, right?

But I do feel sorry for them, honestly. Sometimes it just seems that they are mere targets of designers’ very artisan yet very vicious minds. The line between creative freedom and blatant sadism can be very thin. Have you seen some of the shoes they have to wear and strut down the runway in with hundreds of people watching and dozens of cameras clicking away? The line between shoes and stilts can be a very slim one just as well. They don’t necessarily have to think for their paycheque, but they do have to work for it.
